Varicocele is a disease in which the veins in the scrotum become enlarged. In most cases, it is a left-sided varicocele, but sometimes a right-sided varicocele can also occur. Varicose veins are caused by weakened valves in the veins, which results in a backflow of blood in the veins, which in turn causes the veins to expand.

In old age, kidney tumor can also be a cause of varicose veins of the scrotum. In most cases, varicocele does not cause any discomfort. The classic symptom is pain that gets worse when sitting or standing.

In up to 20% of cases, varicocele can cause decreased sperm quality and infertility. Although varicocele usually occurs in only one testicle, it can affect spermatogenesis, or sperm production, in both testicles.

Varicocele without symptoms does not need treatment.

Treatment options

During surgical treatment a skin incision is made in the left lower abdomen, the enlarged testicular vein is located, and it is cut and ligated. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The operation can also be performed laparoscopically, where a special camera and instruments are introduced into the abdominal cavity through 3 small skin incisions, through which the vein is discovered and cut and ligated

If first surgical treatment proves to be ineffective, then angiography and blood vessel closure or embolization are performed. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
