The most common thyroid disorders are hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include hand tremors, weight loss, rapid heartbeat, light sensitivity in the eyes, irritability, heat intolerance and constant sweating. Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance, constant fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, irregular menstrual cycles, slow heart rate and high cholesterol. On the day before blood sampling, you can eat and drink as usual, but the consumption of alcohol, coffee and fats should be limited. Do not eat or drink two to three hours before giving a blood sample. If necessary, you can drink one glass of clean, unflavoured, non-carbonated water during this time. TSH levels in the blood rise in the evening and are highest during the night. The levels fall back to normal around 9-10 in the morning, so it is advisable to take the blood test in the morning.
