EMDR therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of therapy for treating the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder caused by psychological trauma.

Psychological trauma includes a range of stressful life experiences (e.g. accident, loss, abuse, natural disaster) that a person cannot successfully cope with. Consequently, situations resembling the original event can trigger intense emotions and re-experiencing of the traumatic event, disrupting daily life.

Description of the therapy

EMDR can alleviate the impact of traumatic memories using bilateral visual, auditory or tactile stimulation. Bilateral sensory stimulation facilitates the processing of negative emotions, sensations and beliefs associated with the event, thereby neutralising the impact of the traumatic memory.

The number of therapy sessions needed is individual and depends on both the severity of the trauma and the individual’s capacity for trauma therapy.

The decision on starting therapy will be made by the specialist after the first consultation.
