HDL cholesterol test
Serum HDL-cholesterol (high density lipoprotein; fS-HDL-Chol) is a group of lipids responsible for the transport of cholesterol from the tissues back to the liver. It is called the ‘good cholesterol’ because it helps eliminate excess cholesterol from the blood and thereby reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis. The higher the level of HDL cholesterol, the smaller the risk of developing coronary heart disease.
Since the test is directly affected by diet, it is important to give the blood sample after 10-14 hours without eating or drinking.
