Computed tomography (CT)

Computed tomography (CT) is an X-ray machine connected to a computer that allows layered and three-dimensional images to be taken of the human body. Computed tomography is used, for example, to examine the abdominal region, fractures, vascular issues, tumours, etc. The amount of radiation used in the scan is higher than in a regular X-ray, which is why the scan is performed only for specific medically significant indications.

The results of the examination are evaluated by a radiologist, after which the response is sent to the referring physician. If you wish, we can provide the imaging material of the examination along with the appropriate software on a flash drive (for an additional fee of €25).

PLEASE NOTE! Computed tomography scans are performed only with a referral. It is necessary to book an appointment for the examination. Confido does not accept referrals issued more than 6 months before the examination.

Important to know before arriving for a computed tomography scan:

  • For contrast enhanced scans, do not eat for two to four hours before the scan. You can drink water or juice.
  • If you are hypersensitive or allergic to contrast agents, please inform both the referring doctor and the staff performing the scan.
  • Before the examination you will be asked to remove jewellery and all other metal objects. If you have piercings in the area to be examined that you do not wish to remove, please replace them with plastic piercings that do not contain any metal parts.
  • If necessary, a vein cannula will be placed in your hand, through which a contrast agent containing iodine will be injected to enhance the visibility of organ structures and possible pathological changes. You might feel a sensation of warmth or a metallic taste in your mouth during the injection, which will subside within a few seconds.
  • After the contrast-enhanced scan, you should drink plenty of fluids on the same day (preferably 1.5 to 2 litres of water) to eliminate the contrast agent from your body more quickly.
  • Breastfeeding after a scan with iodinated contrast agents is safe, as the amounts excreted into breast milk are very small. The excretion of the substance into breast milk stops completely within 24 hours.
  • During the scan, it is important to lie still on the scan table, otherwise the scan will fail. Sometimes you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during the scan. The staff will monitor you throughout the examination through a window and you can always communicate with the performing staff via the intercom system.
