Computed tomography
Computed tomography (CT) is an X-ray machine connected to a computer that allows layered and three-dimensional images to be taken of the human body. CT scans are used, among other things, to examine the abdomen, fractures, vascular problems and tumours. The amount of radiation used in the scan is higher than in a normal X-ray, and the procedure is therefore performed only for a specific, medically important indication.
Before the scan, we ask that you:
Please note! Computed tomography is performed only on the basis of a physician’s referral. Test results will be assessed by a radiologist and a response will be sent to the referring physician. Upon request, we can provide you with an USB carrier containing the test images and appropriate software (for an additional fee of €25).
Important to know before arriving for your computed tomography scan:
- Do not eat for 2-4 hours before a scan of the abdominal or pelvic region. Drink only water or juice.
- Before the scan, you are asked to remove all metal objects, jewellery, etc. If necessary, a vein cannula is placed in your hand, through which an iodinated contrast agent is injected to make the structure of the organs more visible, including possible pathological changes. During the injection of the contrast agent, you may feel hot and have a metallic taste in your mouth that goes away in a few seconds.
- After the contrast-enhanced scan, you should drink plenty of fluids (preferably 1.5 to 2 litres of water) on the same day to expel the contrast agent from your body more quickly. Breastfeeding after a scan with iodinated contrast agents is safe because the quantities secreted in breast milk are minuscule. Secretion stops completely within 24 hours.
- During the scan, it is important to lie still on the scan table, otherwise the scan will fail. Sometimes you will be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds during the scan. CT staff will monitor you through the window throughout the scan and you will always be able to communicate with the staff through the audio system.
Please note! You need to book in advance for the scan.
NB! We do not perform computer tomography of heart and peripheral blood vessels.
We accept children only from 15 years old.
