Determination of fasting blood glucose (glucose)

Blood glucose is regulated by the following hormones: insulin, glucagon, adrenaline, cortisol and growth hormone. Strenuous physical exertion, stress, burns and infections can lead to a physiological increase in blood glucose levels.

Following a normal meal, blood glucose levels return to the baseline within 2 to 4 hours.

High values indicate diabetes. Low levels may occur if the amount of carbohydrates obtained from food is insufficient for the degree of physical exertion.

Since the test is directly affected by diet, it is important to give the blood sample after 10-14 hours without eating or drinking.
