Treatment of urinary incontinence with Bulkamid
Look for appointment timesOne form of urinary incontinence is stress incontinence, which occurs when there is involuntary urine leakage during physical exertion, coughing, sneezing, or similar activities. Stress incontinence is particularly common among women, but it also significantly affects men.
Bulkamid is a new solution for treating stress incontinence. It is a water-based gel that is injected into the urethral wall, thus, increasing the volume of the urethral wall and helping to prevent urine leakage from the bladder.
Bulkamid is indicated for stress incontinence in cases where sling surgery has not been effective and for women for whom the placement of a synthetic sling is contraindicated or unsuitable. The Bulkamid procedure can also be performed in cases where the woman plans to have more children. The advantage is the simplicity and speed of the procedure for the patient, and unlike sling surgery, there is no surgical wound that requires a longer recovery time.
Procedure
The procedure is performed on an outpatient clinic under general anesthesia by a gynecologist or urologist.
The procedure consists of injecting a unique water-based filler – polyacrylamide hydrogel – under the urethral mucosa, usually in four places, under the control of a special camera, as a result of which the volume of the urethral wall increases. The procedure improves the urethral closure mechanism, thus preventing urine leakage during physical exertion.
Recovery
After the procedure, the patient may experience mild discomfort and it is normal to have some blood in the urine. The patient can resume daily activities shortly after the procedure, but physical exertion should be avoided for the first couple of days.
