General surgery is a broad speciality that deals with the diagnosis and (surgical) treatment of diseases of the skin and soft tissue, the abdominal wall, the endocrine system and the gastrointestinal tract (in-depth).
Main reasons for consulting a general surgeon: groin hernia, abdominal wall hernia, gallstones and the surgical removal of skin deformities.

A referral is not needed to consult a general surgeon.

At the general surgeon’s appointment, the patient will be thoroughly examined, the results of previous investigations will be reviewed, the need for further investigations (computed tomography, ultrasound, endoscopy) will be assessed and a plan will be made for further treatment. Minor surgical procedures can be performed during the same appointment.

The most common reasons for consulting a general surgeon are:

  • hernia (incisional hernia, inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, etc.)
  • gallstones
  • haemorrhoids
  • varicose veins
  • skin and soft tissue tumours.
