Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterised by elevated blood glucose levels. Diabetes causes damage to large and small blood vessels. Mainly, this disease affects the health of the eyes, kidneys and cardiovascular system. The most common eye-related complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy (DR).
Diabetes is considered one of the leading causes of blindness in adults, but the first changes caused by diabetes may go unnoticed by the patient. Complications of diabetes can be prevented and delayed with early diagnosis and timely treatment. The diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is based on screening, which all diabetics should undergo once a year.
A diabetic screening involves determination of corrected visual acuity, measurement of intraocular pressure, macular and optic nerve analysis (OCT) and a fundus image or a digital photo with a fundus camera, which can be used to identify early diabetic changes. The ophthalmologist will review the photos and determine the stage of DR, the need for monitoring and treatment and the frequency thereof.
PLEASE NOTE! The appointment and the tests may take up to 60 minutes. During the appointment, eye drops will be administered to the patient for dilating the pupil. After that, the vision is blurred for a while and driving a car and working with your eyes may be disturbed for the rest of the day.
The package includes:
- Vision check-up, refractometry, keratometry
- Measurement of intraocular pressure
- OCT macular tomography
- OCT optic disc tomography
- Evaluation of OCT examination
- Fundus photography of the eye
- Assessment and description of the fundus photo
