Allergen patch test
An allergen patch test is a test for the diagnosis of allergic skin inflammation, which helps to identify possible allergens that cause the disease. It is a reliable and safe way to find out the cause of contact dermatitis.
At Confido, we perform two types of epicutaneous tests: European Baseline Serie and Dental Screening Serie.
Indications
- contact dermatitis
- skin inflammation of unknown cause
- dermatitis or eczema on the hands, face, legs or feet that is unresponsive to treatment
- distinguishing allergic contact dermatitis from irritation dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and forms of eczema
Contraindications
- skin inflammation or its flare-up
- fresh/strong tan in the test area
- pregnancy and breastfeeding
- treatment with oral or injectable hormones (glucocorticosteroids such as prednisolone, Medrol), antihistamines and immunosuppressants
- use of topical steroids. 1–2 weeks must have passed since last using them in the test area.
Preparation for the test
As certain factors can affect the result of the test, it is important to know the following:
- 2–4 weeks must have passed from the flare-up of skin inflammation in the test area
- a minimum of 2 weeks must have passed from intensive tanning
- 2 weeks must have passed since the use of corticosteroid ointments in the test area
- it is recommended to take a shower on the morning of the test day
- it is recommended not to use skin care products in the test area on the test day
- if your back is hairy, the upper back must be shaved 2 days before the test
Test procedure
For the test, it is necessary to visit the nurse’s office three days in one week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). At the first visit, patched for the allergens to be tested are placed on your upper back. The patches will remain in place for two days (48 hours). At the second visit, the patches are removed and an initial skin assessment is performed. On the third visit, the final evaluation of the test results is carried out. In case of a positive test result, a doctor’s consultation will be necessary.
Do not wash the test area during the examination period (for 5 days). Avoid active activities that cause sweating (hard physical work, exercise, sauna), which in turn can cause the patches to come off the skin. It is also necessary to avoid tanning of the back and light therapy.
Moderate itching and discomfort may be felt in the test area. The skin may become red, blistered or dry, and swelling may occur. Make sure the patches are firmly attached to the skin. If necessary, apply additional patches to the edges of the patches.
