Deep dental cleaning (gum treatment)

Look for appointment times

Deep dental cleaning is a periodontal treatment procedure that aims to remove tartar, bacteria and inflamed tissue from the periodontal pockets and the surfaces of tooth roots. Unlike prophylactic dental cleaning, deep cleaning is performed below the gum line, where bacterial biofilm can cause gingivitis and periodontitis.

Deep cleaning is often carried out in several stages in multiple appointments and local anaesthesia is administered before the procedure if necessary. Additional services must be paid for on site after the appointment.

Main indications for deep dental cleaning:

  • the need to clean periodontal pockets and tooth roots
  • bleeding gums
  • gum recession
  • gum diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis)
  • tooth mobility

During the appointment, the periodontist will assess the condition of your gums and periodontal pockets and determine whether deep dental cleaning can be performed during the same appointment. If necessary, the doctor will also take an X-ray. If the procedure cannot be performed during the same appointment, the doctor will arrange a diagnostic visit to assess the extent of the disease and prepare a treatment plan.

Following deep dental cleaning, temporary tooth sensitivity and mild bleeding may occur. These symptoms usually subside within a few days. It is very important to follow all post-procedure recommendations provided by the periodontist.

The periodontist will invite you for a follow-up appointment or repeat procedure according to your individual treatment plan.

Post-procedure recommendations:

  • eat softer or more liquid foods
  • follow good oral hygiene
  • use toothpastes and mouthwashes recommended by the doctor
  • avoid tobacco products, as they interfere with healing
  • attend follow-up appointments according to the treatment plan prepared by the doctor

Contraindications:

  • acute infection in the mouth
  • uncontrolled diabetes
  • immunodeficiency

The exact cost of the deep dental cleaning procedure will be determined after the initial appointment, once the periodontist has assessed and determined the extent of the gum disease. If deep dental cleaning cannot be performed during the appointment, the patient must pay on site for all other services provided.

If you are not sure whether you need a deep dental cleaning procedure, we recommend starting with a consultation with a periodontist.

We accept patients from the age of 18.

We kindly ask you to fill in a health questionnaire before your appointment, which will be included in your booking confirmation.
