Child Neuropsychologist Appointment
Look for appointment timesNeuropsychology focuses on understanding and studying the connections between the brain and behavior. For example, clinical neuropsychology aims to clarify how brain function and brain health affect a person’s emotions, behavior, and cognitive abilities (e.g., learning, memory, attention, problem-solving skills). Thus, a child neuropsychologist is a mental health specialist with in-depth knowledge of neuropsychology, clinical psychology, neurology, developmental psychology, as well as appropriate intervention and rehabilitation options.
A child neuropsychologist consults with children, parents, and, if necessary, kindergarten or school teachers and support specialists regarding common neuropsychiatric disorders and problems (e.g., ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, epilepsy, brain injury, social-emotional and behavioral disorders) that cause difficulties in coping.
If needed, the child neuropsychologist assesses a child’s cognitive and social-emotional development and coping skills through clinical interviews, observation, questionnaires, and standardized tests. The specialist identifies the child’s strengths as well as areas that need development and support (fees for assessments are added to the consultation, and separate appointments are scheduled for assessments).
In cooperation with the child, the parent(s), and, if needed and at the parent’s request, also with kindergarten or school teachers and support specialists, an individual support and intervention plan is prepared for the child. If necessary, a child psychiatrist, special education teacher, or speech therapist may also be involved in the process.
We recommend consulting a child neuropsychologist if the child shows:
- attention and/or concentration problems
- difficulties with self-control
- memory and learning-related problems
- challenges with adaptation and/or social interaction
A consultation with a child neuropsychologist is also recommended if the parent is concerned about their child’s overall cognitive and/or social-emotional development and feels the need for guidance and advice on how to better support the child’s development.
