Surgical removal of a birthmark
Look for appointment timesWe recommend consulting a dermatologist for the removal of a mole. The dermatologist will assess the need for removal after examining the mole. Although the dermatologist may recommend mole removal, the final decision lies with the individual. After surgical removal of the mole, the tissue is always sent to a laboratory for examination to determine whether the change is benign or malignant. It is not possible to make such an assessment with the naked eye. The results of the examination will be available within 3–4 weeks.
When to consider birthmark examination and removal
We strongly recommend consulting a specialist if a birthmark exhibits any of the following changes:
- Becomes painful or shows signs of inflammation
- Undergoes changes in shape or color
- Increases significantly in size
- Begins to discharge fluid with an unpleasant odor
About the surgical procedure
- The duration of the procedure depends on the number, location, and characteristics of the birthmark(s).
- Removal is performed under local anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort.
- The procedure is generally not painful—mild discomfort may be felt only during the administration of the anesthetic injection.
