Look for appointment timesGeneral surgery is a medical specialty that covers diseases of the skin and soft tissues, abdominal wall, endocrine system, and gastrointestinal tract, as well as their diagnosis and treatment. During a general surgeon’s appointment, a thorough examination is performed, previous medical records and test results are reviewed, and if necessary, additional investigations are planned, such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or endoscopy.
A personalised treatment plan is developed during the visit. Minor surgical procedures may also be performed during the same appointment, when appropriate.
The most common reasons for consulting a general surgeon include:
- skin and soft tissue tumours (skin lesions, moles, etc.)
- abdominal and gastrointestinal complaints, including hernias (inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, incisional hernia, etc.), gallstones, tumours
- matters related to surgical treatment of obesity
