FODMAP Diet Counseling
Look for appointment timesAccording to Monash University, approximately 15% of the world’s population suffers from IBS-like symptoms (bloating, gas, diarrhea) and approximately 60% of patients have a clear connection between their complaints and diet. Approximately 70% of these patients could benefit from a FODMAP diet.
What are FODMAPs?
What does the abbreviation FODMAP mean:
- F – Fermentable
- O – Oligosaccharides (fructans, galactooligosaccharides – (onions, garlic, legumes)
- D – Disaccharides (lactose)
- M – Monosaccharides (fructose)
- A – And
- P – Polyols (sorbitol, mannitol)
These are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed from the small intestine and cause complaints when broken down by bacteria in the large intestine.
One possible method for relieving IBS symptoms is the low-FODMAP diet.
A low-FODMAP diet is difficult to follow alone, and the diet should never last longer than recommended, as it is very restrictive.
If you have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome or suspect that digestive disorders are caused by diet, we look forward to seeing you at our gastroenterology nurse. During the low-FODMAP consultation, you will receive all the necessary information about the diet, learn Control your IBS symptoms and improve your quality of life.
The diet consists of three phases. The first two phases require internal motivation and willingness to change your eating habits (12–13 weeks). In the third phase, you can eat a full and varied diet, with only minimal restrictions.
Before starting the diet, it is important to rule out celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
