Photopeel
Combined chemical peel and IPL photorejuvenation procedure
Photopeel is a combined skin-quality-improving procedure that integrates chemical peeling and IPL photorejuvenation (intense pulsed light). These two methods affect the skin in different ways, and using them together makes it possible to address several skin concerns at the same time.
Chemical peeling helps remove the superficial damaged layers of skin cells and supports the skin’s natural renewal process. IPL photorejuvenation directs light energy into the deeper layers of the skin, where it affects pigment, superficial blood vessels, and overall skin quality.
The procedure is suitable for people who wish to improve the general appearance of their skin and whose main concerns include:
- uneven skin tone;
- sun damage;
- pigment spots;
- redness and visible superficial blood vessels;
- dull or tired-looking complexion;
- enlarged pores;
- fine lines;
- early signs of ageing.
Photopeel is most commonly performed on the facial area, but also on the neck or décolleté.
What can be improved in the appearance of the skin with photopeel?
Photopeel does not alter facial features and does not replace surgical or injectable aesthetic medicine procedures. Its purpose is to improve skin quality and even out the appearance of the skin.
The procedure may help to:
- make the complexion more even;
- reduce superficial pigmentation;
- reduce redness;
- improve skin texture;
- make pores less noticeable;
- give the skin a fresher and more rested appearance;
- support the skin’s natural collagen production.
The result depends on the condition of the skin, age, lifestyle, the extent of sun damage, and individual healing capacity. The first visible changes may be noticed within approximately 1-3 weeks, but the skin renewal process continues for longer. Some clients notice a fresher appearance of the skin already within the first weeks after the procedure. Reduction of pigmentation changes and redness usually occurs gradually. The final result is usually assessed after several weeks to a few months, depending on the treatment plan.
The number of procedures required depends on the goal and the condition of the skin. In general, 1-2 procedures are recommended for skin refreshment; in cases of pigmentation, redness, or texture changes, a treatment course of 3–5 procedures is usually recommended.
We recommend consulting a specialist before the procedure to assess suitability, possible results, and to minimise risks and complications. During the consultation, the specialist assesses the condition of the skin, identifies possible contraindications, provides a realistic overview of the expected result, determines the number of procedure sessions, explains all aspects related to the procedure, and gives instructions for proper aftercare at home. If the scheduled procedure cannot be performed due to client-related reasons, the consultation fee shall be payable by the client.
- Oncological diseases, epilepsy, melasma, keloid scars, active inflammatory conditions, including herpes
- Tanned skin – tanning, including tanning beds, should be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks before the procedure
- The procedure is not performed during antibiotic treatment; 3-4 weeks must have passed since the last dose of medication
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Tattoo in the treatment area
- The procedure is not performed on persons under 18 years of age without the consent of a parent or legal guardian
Contraindications may be relative, and the final decision regarding the procedure is made by the specialist during an in-person examination and consultation before the procedure.
- Fotopeel is generally a safe procedure, however, as with any medical procedure, side effects may occur.
- The most common temporary reactions are redness, swelling, dryness, flaking, and skin sensitivity.
- Less commonly, a stronger inflammatory reaction, blisters or crusts, temporary changes in skin pigmentation, and, very rarely, scarring may occur. To reduce risks, it is important to follow the aftercare and sun-protection instructions provided by the specialist.
- After the procedure, pigment may temporarily darken as part of the pigment shedding process, and pigment crusts may appear on the skin. These usually detach naturally within approximately 7-10 days. They must not be removed manually, as this may damage the skin.
- Tanning, including tanning beds, should be avoided for at least 2-4 weeks before and after the procedure due to the risk of pigmentation. After the procedure, SPF 50 sunscreen should be used for at least 2 weeks; to prolong the result, year-round use is recommended.
- Self-tanning products should be avoided for 2-4 weeks before and after the procedure.
- Products containing retinol or similar active ingredients should be discontinued 3 days before the procedure. Use may be resumed once the skin has recovered from the procedure.
- At least 6 months should have passed since the use of medications containing isotretinoin.
- The specialist must be informed about any medications being taken before coming to the procedure.
- Alcohol consumption is not recommended for at least 1 day after the procedure.
- Intensive exercise should be avoided for 2-7 days after the procedure, depending on skin sensitivity.
- Saunas and hot baths should be avoided for at least 1-2 weeks after the procedure, depending on skin recovery.
- An interval of at least 2 weeks should be left before undergoing other facial procedures.
- Makeup should be avoided for at least 12 hours after the procedure, and wetting the skin should be avoided for 5 hours.
Most people can resume their usual daily activities on the same or the following day. Recovery time depends on the parameters used and the individual reaction of the skin.
