Orchiopexy in case of an undescended testicle
Look for appointment timesOrchieopexy is a surgical procedure performed on children whose testicle(s) has/have not descended into the scrotum by birth. An undescended testicle may remain in the abdominal cavity, inguinal canal, or elsewhere near the abdominal wall. The aim of the surgery is to place the testicle in its proper position in the scrotum and secure it there.
Surgery
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon will make a small incision in the groin to locate the undescended testicle and free it from the surrounding tissues. The testicle is then carefully guided into the scrotum, where it is secured. If necessary, the anatomy of the scrotum or the inguinal canal is closed and corrected.
Recovery
Most children can go home on the same day if they recover well and don’t develop any complications.
Mild pain and swelling in the groin may occur in the first few days after surgery, which can be managed with painkillers. Recovery usually takes one to two weeks, during which time intense physical activity should be avoided.
After the surgery, the testicle’s development is regularly monitored to ensure normal growth and function.
Orchiopexy is crucial for preventing future risk of testicular cancer, infertility or other potential complications.
