Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive technique used to remove varicose veins by injecting an exact dose of a special safe sclerosant into an unwanted vein, which causes the walls of the vein to stick together, stop working and close. Sclerotherapy allows you to get rid of small veins in the early stages of varicose veins. The decision on the need for sclerotherapy, the number of stages, and the volume will be made by the vascular surgeon of the Confido laser treatment department after a personal consultation.

Effects of sclerotherapy

As a result of the procedure, the walls of the veins stick together, the enlarged vein closes and is no longer noticeable. The effect will take several weeks to three months, depending on the size of the blood vessels.

About the procedure

Sometimes you need to shave your skin before the procedure. If necessary, your doctor will tell you. The procedure is painless because very fine needles are used in sclerotherapy. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and recovery is rapid. The procedure usually takes 5-10 minutes. The patient’s vein is punctured. Your doctor will carefully monitor the correct insertion of the needle. The prepared sclerosant is then injected. There are generally no painful sensations, but in rare cases, a slight burning sensation may occur in the lower extremity area with increased sensitivity. Sclerotherapy can take place in several stages. Significant effects are usually seen after the first procedure. Several injections can be given during one procedure. If necessary, your doctor will recommend that you wear a compression wash after the procedure.

Contraindications

After the procedure

After the procedure, the patient may be advised to walk (sometimes up to 40 minutes at a moderate pace) and wear compression stockings.
