Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infectious diseases spread through sexual contact. A large portion of STDs are asymptomatic. People often carry and transmit pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) unknowingly. Generally, STDs can be divided into three groups: those causing genital ulcers (e.g., syphilis, genital herpes), inflammatory diseases (e.g., chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gonorrhea), and infections that spread through sexual contact but result in systemic illness (e.g., HIV) or internal organ damage (e.g., hepatitis B).

Testing is recommended if STD-related symptoms appear after intercourse. It is also wise to get tested even without symptoms in case of casual sex or suspected exposure.

When should you definitely get tested:

  • Men experience blisters or ulcers in the genital area, painful urination, or rectal discharge.
  • Women have abnormal vaginal discharge, changes in its nature or foul odor, or unusual bleeding during intercourse.

Testing is advisable if:

  • You’ve had multiple sexual partners recently.
  • Your partner has been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
  • You’ve had unprotected sex with a new or casual partner.
  • You’re starting a new sexual relationship.
  • You are planning a pregnancy or are in early pregnancy. STDs can transmit from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth, potentially causing miscarriage or newborn complications.

STD Testing options:

  1. STD DNA Test (vaginal swab for women, urine test for men):
  • Chlamydia (C. trachomatis and LGV variant),
  • Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas vaginalis),
  • Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae),
  • Mycoplasmosis (M. genitalium).
  1. Blood-based STD Test (venous blood analysis):
  • HIV,
  • Syphilis,
  • Hepatitis B,
  • Hepatitis C.
  1. STD Testing Package includes:
  • STD DNA test,
  • Blood-based STD test,
  • General practitioner consultation via DigiClinic.

NB! All tests should be done one month after potential exposure for accurate results. If symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately.

Sample Collection

Women:

  • Vaginal swab is recommended before or after menstruation.
  • Swab is collected at the clinic by a midwife during a gynecological examination.

Men:

  • Urine must be collected in a sterile, single-use container (available at pharmacies), stored at +2 to +8 °C for up to 12 hours.
  • Alternatively, the sample can be collected on-site at Confido clinic.

Important instructions:

  • No urination for at least 4 hours before testing.
  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Gently massage genital area before urination to ensure valid sample.
  • Only the first 10–20 ml of urine is needed.

Test Results

Results will be available on the Health Portal within five working days. A nurse or midwife will call you and, if necessary, refer you to a DigiClinic GP for consultation or prescriptions.
