Electrocardiography (ECG) is a test where electrodes are attached to uncovered skin on the upper body and arms and legs to record a graphical representation of the electrical activity of the heart.

An ECG can be used to assess:

  • the rate and rhythm of heartbeats;
  • disorders of the blood supply to the heart muscle (myocardial ischaemia);
  • myocardial infarction (acute myocardial infarction, prior myocardial infarction);
  • ventricular overload and enlargement.

When coming for the test, wear something comfortable as you will be asked to remove clothing on your upper body and expose your ankles. During the test, you will lie on your back on an examination table and electrodes will be attached to your chest, arms and legs. Sometimes it may be necessary to shave the areas where electrodes are placed. You will be asked to lie still and silent to maintain a quality signal.

In the case of acute illness (permanent chest pain, myocardial infarction), changes in ECG can occur relatively quickly. Therefore, a repeat ECG may be required. A recorded ECG contains information on the condition of your heart.

The service includes a remote consultation with a Digital Clinic doctor to interpret examination results.
