Myofunctional therapy
Look for appointment timesMyofunctional disorders occur when the muscles of the face and oral region do not work in balance. As a result, incorrect habits may develop, such as an open-mouth posture, an incorrect resting position of the tongue, or an infantile (atypical) swallowing pattern.
These changes may cause breathing and bite problems, sleep disturbances, and even speech difficulties. Often, parents or individuals themselves first notice the following signs:
- constantly open mouth;
- mouth breathing and snoring;
- excessive salivation;
- speech problems;
- eating difficulties in children (e.g., when a child cannot chew solid food properly);
- harmful oral habits (e.g., thumb sucking);
- headaches, as well as tension in the neck and shoulder area.
One of the most common causes is mouth breathing, which over time may lead to malocclusion, improper jaw development, sleep problems, postural changes, and an increased risk of cavities.
How does therapy help?
Myofunctional therapy is a treatment method based on specific exercises that retrain the muscles of the mouth and face to work properly again. During therapy, patients learn to restore natural nasal breathing, correct swallowing, and proper tongue posture.
The goals of therapy are to:
- restore the natural function and strength of the muscles;
- support orthodontic treatment and prevent bite disorders;
- improve sleep quality and overall well-being;
- support correct tongue resting position, nasal breathing, and normal swallowing.
Therapy is carried out with an individualized exercise program, part of which is performed during sessions, but consistent home practice also plays a major role. The duration of therapy depends on the person’s needs and the severity of the problems.
When to seek therapy?
It is worth starting myofunctional therapy at the first signs of symptoms in order to prevent later health issues. If you notice any of the above-mentioned signs in yourself or your child, we recommend consulting a specialist to receive professional assessment and help.
