Blood Test for Early Detection of Colon and Rectal Cancer
Look for appointment timesThe ColonAiQ blood test helps detect DNA methylation patterns in the blood associated with colon and rectal cancer (colorectal cancer) and precancerous changes.
Early detection of colorectal cancer is important because treatment outcomes depend, among other factors, on the stage at which the cancer is diagnosed. The treatment success rate is up to 90% in the early stages, 71% in cases with metastases, and only 10–20% when distant metastases are present.
What are colon and rectal cancer?
Colon and rectal cancer are among the most common malignant tumours. In the early stages, the disease may not cause any symptoms. It can develop from polyps that form in the lining of the large intestine and may become malignant over several years.
What does the ColonAiQ blood test analyse?
The ColonAiQ blood test examines DNA methylation patterns in two regions of the SEPT9 gene and in the BCAT1, IKZF1, and VAV3 genes. It detects specific DNA changes associated with colorectal cancer and precancerous changes.
Who is the test intended for?
- People over the age of 50
- Individuals with chronic diseases
- People with a family history of colon or rectal cancer
- Individuals whose lifestyle increases their risk of colorectal cancer (sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, a low-fibre diet, high consumption of red meat or processed foods, smoking, and frequent alcohol consumption)
- Follow-up monitoring and assessment of the risk of recurrence after surgical treatment for colorectal cancer
The service includes:
- Nurse appointment for blood sample collection. The test is performed using a venous blood sample. Fasting is not required before the blood test. It is recommended to drink sufficient fluids before providing the sample.
- Remote consultation with a doctor to interpret the test results. The consultation takes place approximately two weeks after the blood sample is collected. The doctor will explain the test results and their significance and, if necessary, recommend additional examinations.
Who is the test not suitable for?
The ColonAiQ test is not performed during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or following a recent blood transfusion.
Does the ColonAiQ blood test replace a colonoscopy?
The ColonAiQ blood test result does not constitute a cancer diagnosis. If the test result indicates possible abnormalities, the doctor will assess the need for further examinations. A colonoscopy and, if necessary, a tissue biopsy may be required to diagnose colon or rectal cancer.
