Diphtheria, also known as throat diphtheria, is an acute bacterial infectious disease. The disease is transmitted through direct contact from person to person as well as through droplet transmission when coughing or sneezing. It typically affects the upper respiratory tract or the skin. In general, inflammation (swelling) occurs in the respiratory tract, causing breathing difficulties and, in rare cases, suffocation.

Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is a bacterial infectious disease characterised by generalised muscle spasms. Tetanus bacteria enter the body through cuts, scratches or wounds on the skin. Tetanus is characterised by increased muscle tone and spasms.

As part of the national immunisation schedule, starting from April 2025, adults will be able to get vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus free of charge. According to the recommendation of the Health Board, adults should receive a booster vaccination every ten years to ensure lasting immune protection against these serious diseases.

The service is available to adults from the age of 19 who have an Estonian personal identification code.
