Dr Piret Mertsina graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tartu in the speciality of curative medical care (1993), completed a two-year general physician internship (1998) and a residency in endocrinology (2002). Dr Mertsina is a member of the Estonian Society of Endocrinology. In 2021, Dr Mertsina took up studies as a resident in medical genetics.
