Replacement of breast implants
Look for appointment timesReplacement of breast implants is a surgical procedure in which previously placed breast implants are removed and replaced with new ones. The need or wish to replace breast implants may arise for medical or aesthetic reasons.
Replacement of breast implants may be necessary in cases such as rupture or leakage of an implant, capsular contracture, displacement of an implant, breast asymmetry, or other implant-related complications. A patient’s preferences may also change over time, leading to a wish for implants of a different size, shape, or characteristics. Breast shape may also change due to ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or changes in body weight.
During the surgery, the existing breast implants are removed and the condition of the surrounding capsule and breast tissue is assessed. If necessary, the capsule around the implants may be partially or completely removed or surgically adjusted. New breast implants of a suitable size and shape are then placed. The choice of implants and surgical technique depends on the patient’s anatomy, the condition of the existing implants, and the desired outcome.
If there is also significant breast sagging or a change in breast shape, replacement of the implants may be combined with a breast lift or another corrective procedure.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The duration of the surgery and the recovery period depend on the extent of the procedure and whether removal or correction of the capsule or another corrective procedure is performed at the same time. During recovery, patients are usually advised to wear a special supportive bra and avoid strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting for several weeks.
Before undergoing replacement of breast implants, it is important to consult an experienced surgeon, who will assess the condition of the existing implants and breast tissue, discuss the patient’s goals and expectations, and help select suitable new implants and the most appropriate surgical technique based on individual needs.
