Dr Toomas Marandi graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tartu in 1993, completed his doctoral studies in 1999 and completed specialty training in both cardiology and clinical pharmacology in 2002.
Dr Marandi has worked at North Estonia Medical Centre since 2002 and at the Heart Clinic of the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tartu since 2013.
He has been an active member of the Estonian Society of Cardiology since 2001. Since 2008, he has served as the National Guidelines Coordinator for the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). He was President of the Estonian Society of Cardiology from 2009 to 2011 and has led the Society’s Working Group on Acute Coronary Syndromes since 2011. He has also reviewed several ESC clinical practice guidelines and consensus documents.
Dr Marandi has a particular interest in the comprehensive management of patients following myocardial infarction (heart attack), from the onset of the condition and hospital treatment through to post-discharge recovery and follow-up, with a strong emphasis on effective multidisciplinary collaboration.
His other areas of interest include pharmacotherapy for cardiovascular diseases, drug interactions and adverse effects, and the integration of modern digital solutions into everyday clinical practice. These solutions aim to improve treatment outcomes, support clinical research and ensure compliance with quality standards.
From 2024 to 2025, Dr Marandi served as team leader and project manager of the Post-Discharge Care Pathway for Patients Following Myocardial Infarction project, part of the Estonian Health Insurance Fund’s (Tervisekassa) care pathway accelerator programme. He presented the project findings at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Madrid in autumn 2025. The results now form the basis for the nationwide approach to post-discharge care for patients following myocardial infarction in Estonia.
Since 2026, Dr Marandi has coordinated the revision of national quality indicators for myocardial infarction in cooperation with the Estonian Society of Cardiology and Tervisekassa.
He also leads a working group comprising representatives of the Estonian Society of Cardiology, the Estonian Society of Radiology and the Estonian Society of Laboratory Medicine. The group is responsible for translating into Estonian and implementing a new international consensus document, the Fifth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction.
