How does laser tattoo removal work?

The laser beam at our clinic is applied only to the specific dye without affecting and damaging the skin. The laser acts specifically on the skin area with tattoo, destroying coloured pigment only without leaving burns and scars. The laser beam destroys only the tattoo dye and the resultant microscopic particles of the dye are excreted from the body for several weeks after the procedure. As a result, the tattoo fades, eventually disappearing completely after the course of procedures.

    Indications for laser tattoo removal

If you are unhappy with the work of the tattoo artist or the colour tint or shape of your tattoo has changed after a long period of time, this procedure will allow the tattoo to fade for the application of a new one or you can totally remove the annoying tattoo. The recommended course ranges from two to nine procedures, depending on the metabolic rate, age, skin area and other individual characteristics of your body. If the tattoo was made improperly, there are scars or you underwent an unsuccessful tattoo removal at another clinic, more than nine procedures may be required to remove the tattoo completely. However, many tattoos are removed in just a few procedures

    Contraindications for laser tattoo removal

    • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
    • Painful menstruation on the day of the procedure
    • Recent tan acquired less than two weeks before the session
    • Aggravation of herpes infection with intense breakouts
    • Predisposition to keloid scar formation
    • Acute infectious diseases
    • Cancerous diseases
    • Epilepsy
    • Almost all of these contraindications are relative, and the final decision on the procedure is made by the doctor or nurse at Confido Aesthetic Medicine Clinic during the individual physical examination and consultation prior to the procedure.

How is the procedure for laser tattoo removal performed?

For tattoo removal, we use powerful laser medical equipment (there are several lasers in our arsenal) and a special cryosystem to prevent skin damage. Before the procedure, the laser medicine doctor or certified nurse will conduct and examination and provide a detailed consultation with the subsequent removal procedure. The procedure takes several minutes on average. The skin at the tattoo area is cleaned and then air anaesthesia is applied to the desired area, if necessary (the air stream from cryosystem is cooled to minus 20 degrees Celsius). To protect the patient’s eyes, special protective glasses are used. The laser procedure is then carried out, which is felt as an intense tingling sensation. Following the procedure, the skin at the tattoo area can be treated with a medical antiseptic and, if necessary, additional cooling is applied with the application of the medicine for better regeneration. The recovery process (slight reddening and swelling) takes from several hours to a few days and will go away on its own.

      Effects of laser tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal is the only way to remove the dye completely, regardless of how long ago it was applied. As a result of the laser procedure, a decrease in the brightness of the tattoo will be seen. The effect will be noticeable two to three days after the procedure as soon as the swelling diminishes and will continue to become more prominent over one to two months. After eight weeks, the repeat procedure can be performed.

      Before the procedure

Before the procedure, a face-to-face consultation with a Confido Laser Treatment doctor or certified nurse is required, during which it will be possible to accurately assess the condition and dimensions of the tattoo, the depth of the pigment, the presence of skin micro-scarring and other important parameters affecting the prognosis and cost of the procedure. Do not forget to inform the doctor of your allergies. Do not tan or use the solarium two weeks before the procedure.

      After the procedure

If swelling of the tattoo area occurs, you can apply an ice pack. Avoid saunas, baths and swimming pools as well as peels and scrubs during the first few days after the procedure. Within 14 days after the procedure, avoid sunbathing and solariums. It is recommended to use sun cream when planning to go outside.

Nanosecond lasers are the gold standard for tattoo removal in the world and have been in use for over ten years. The pulse of these lasers is very short (on the order of a millionth of a second). Confido’s nanosecond lasers are used in Viru and Tartu clinics.

The tattoo removal market has recently been revolutionized by premium lasers with even shorter pulses! The first picosecond laser in Estonia is in use at the Confido Veerenni clinic. The difference between lasers is the pulse length – the pulse of a picosecond laser is even 1000 times shorter than the pulse of a nanosecond laser! This means that the laser beam damages the tissues even less, breaks up the pigment even better and is suitable for people who want to remove the tattoo even faster, with less damage to the skin and with a lower risk of post-procedural complications.

Because the cost of lasers varies greatly, the prices of the procedures are not the same.
