Pain & the nervous system

Procedures

Identifying the causes of chronic pain is sometimes a time-consuming process and the treatment plan for pain is often multi-faceted. The goal is to find a treatment plan that works best for the particular individual.

Sometimes different procedures need to be combined in a treatment plan since there are no single miracle remedies for complicated medical conditions.

We perform procedures to block nerves and inject different kinds of medicine into injured joints. Dr Toomsoo performs botox injections as a treatment option for migraines if other treatment options fail.

Important

  • The necessity of nerve blocking is decided by the doctor during the consultation and it is performed either during the same consultation or on another occasion that is agreed upon.
  • The necessity of intra-articular injection is decided by the doctor during the consultation and it is performed either during the same consultation or on another occasion that is agreed upon.
  • The necessity of a botox injection as a pain treatment option is decided by the neurologist during the consultation.
  • Prices of the procedures are not included in the prices of the consultations.

Nerve block

Nerve block is a local anaesthetic method by which an injection of anaesthetic or hormone is made near or into a nerve. Nerve blocking is used in selected cases to temporarily relieve pain or soothe inflammation and swelling, but also for diagnostic purposes in order to identify the possible location of the pain.

It can be a one-time procedure, but also be performed many times with temporary effect.

Our neurosurgeon Dr Andres Asser makes the decision whether nerve block should be used. The procedure can be done during his consultation. The price of the consultation is 150 euros.

Botox injection

Traditional treatment methods will not work for many people suffering from chronic migraines. For these people, doctors can recommend injecting botox, the famous component of plastic surgery, into the head area. Botox is not the first choice in the treatment of chronic migraines. Only if pills do not work or cause side effects or other problems can the doctor recommend injections. Cooperation between the doctor and the patient is the necessary prerequisite of this procedure in order to ensure that the treatment is the best possible solution.

At Confido, Dr Toomas Toomsoo is the one responsible for the deciding whether to use the method and he also performs the procedure. The price depends on the extent of the injections. Patient is informed of this information prior to the procedure.

  • Migraine treatment with botox involves injections into the neck and head area of the patient. These injections do not allow transfer of nerve impulses from the nerves into the muscles and causes them to relax.
  • The side effect of this is the possible development of hemorrhage in the area. Allergic reactions are very rare.
  • It takes at least three separate treatments to evaluate the extent of the effect against migraines.

Intra-articular Synvisc injection

Articular puncture is used to diagnose and treat articular diseases. Sometimes it is necessary to put medicine into the joint to sooth the discomforts. In certain cases we inject hyoluronic acid based gel-like substance (Synvisc ja Synvisc One) into the injured knee.

Hyoluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that acts as a lubricant and padding for the joint. The injection decreases the discomforts, increases the mobility of the joint and makes the joint heal faster.

We recommend the Synvisc procedure to those who actively and daily use the injured joint. The procedure is helpful for arthrosis and for all stages of joint damage.

  • Synvisc
Three Synvisc injections are given within a week. The pain free period lasts up to 12 months. The cost of the injection is 125 euros.
  • Synvisc One
Synvisc One is injected only once. The pain free period lasts up to 12 months. Cost of the injection is 295 euros.
Price of the procedure 125-295 €
Duration of the procedure 15-25 minutes

How is the procedure performed?

  • First, the doctor will clean the area of the skin where the injection is made and then the joint is punctured with a needle through which the medicine is delivered into the joint.
  • Local anaesthetic is not required for this procedure.
  • The place of the injection is covered with band aid and if necessary, with a bandage.
  • The band aid or bandage has to stay on as long as the doctor prescribes or at least 24 hours.

Good to know

  • The skin needs to be clean (avoid using oils and ointments).
  • The joint can be moved and leaned on right after the procedure.
  • In very rare cases the joint becomes infected or starts to bleed. If the joint becomes painful and the area around it reddens and swells up and your temperature starts to rise, immediately turn to the doctor who performed the injection for a follow-up examination.

Intra-articular Erectus injection

Intra-articular injections are used to treat joint diseases (osteoarthritis). In some cases, it is necessary to inject medication into the joint to help relieve the pain, for example, injecting the hyaluronic acid-based medication Erectus into an affected knee joint. The result of the injection is reduced pain, accelerated healing and the need for surgery is either delayed or deemed unnecessary.

Hyoluronic acid is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and acts as a lubricant and shock-absorber. The effect of the Erectus procedure is up to 6 months. Price of the procedure is 95 euros.

Ultrasonography of carpal tunnel

The syndrome of carpal tunnel or wrist canal is caused by the compression of a nerve that goes through the carpal tunnel of the wrist. It occurs most commonly in middle-aged women. Characteristic of the syndrome is the painfulness and numbness of the fingers close to the thumb, and that it aggravates at night. It is only diagnosed if these characteristic signs are present and even then additional tests are required.

At Confido the ultrasonographical examination is performed to diagnose the carpal canal syndrome. The examination involves the monitoring, measuring and assessing the carpal tunnel area. The ultrasonographic examination reveals the changes in the tissues surrounding the canal and the possible swelling of the median nerve.

The doctor decides during the consultation whether the ultrasonography is needed, and a separate time is appointed for it. The examination is performed at our clinic.

Price of the examination 40 €
Duration of the examination 15-30 minutes
