Pain & the nervous system

Confido employs experienced general practitioners (GPs) who are the top of their field, neurologist Prof Toomas Toomsoo and neurosurgeon Dr Andres Asser. We recommend visiting our neurologist in case of different generic neurological concerns, including chronic headaches. The neurosurgeon diagnoses and treats brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system diseases, performs differential diagnostics and explains the necessity of treatment.

Headaches or constant pain in other parts of the body, numbness of hands or legs and coordination disorders can be signs of neurological health problems. We recommend turning first to our GP who performs an initial examination and necessary tests and then assesses whether there is a need for an additional consultation with the neurologist, neurosurgeon or some other therapist.

  • You do not have to endure pain, it can be treated or mitigated through changes in lifestyle.
  • Before coming to consult with the doctor, analyse your complaints to find out when they started and how have they changed in time.
  • If you are using medication, think carefully which ones you have been taking and how they affected your well-being and health condition and what medical advice you have been following.

Relieving back pains

Back pain can arise from bad muscle tone, overweight, hard physical labour, bad lifestyle, fixed forced positions, traumas or from a specific disease. Back pain may also be caused by organ dysfunctions, for example by renal diseases. Before giving the most suitable treatment advice and undergoing supplementary examinations or visiting a specialist for a consultation, the cause of the pain must be found out. In order to soothe and treat the back pain, we need a comprehensive overview of the pain and the circumstances, events and health concerns accompanying it.

What do you have to do?

  • Remind yourself when did the pains start and how have they changed in time.
  • Remind yourself whether the pains were preceded by some sort of a health concern, trauma or some other seemingly unimportant circumstance.
  • Think of the treatment advice you have been following and medication you have been using. Evaluate their effectiveness in improving your state of mind.
  • Take with you the test results that only you know of. The doctors can already acquaint with your medical history through the digital database.

Where to turn to?

At Confido, various doctors and specialists can provide help with back pains:

Consultation with the neurologist

We recommend visiting our neurologist to diagnose and treat nervous system diseases (including headache and pain in other areas), to get an expert opinion on an earlier diagnose or treatment plan, or if the waiting time of the public health care service is too long. The main diseases the neurologist diagnoses and treats are stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, uncontrollable muscle contractions that result in improper body positions and movements (dystonia), sclerosis (Sclerosis multiples), restless legs syndrome, nervous system infectious diseases (meningitis, encephalitis, Borrelia) and many more.

Our neurologist also gives advice on how to recover from a neurological disease and how to cope with a chronic disease. Price of the consultation is 100 euros.

My goal is to identify the disease or show that it is not neurological in origin. If the disease exists, I will determine the treatment and give suggestions that will alleviate discomforts in everyday life.

Consultation with the neurosurgeon

The neurosurgeon is concerned with the brain, spinal cord and spinal column injuries, tumorous diseases of the nervous system, cerebrovascular diseases, etc. The reason for visiting the neurosurgeon is often lumbar and cervical radiculitis, slipped disc, narrowing of the spinal canal etc. The neurosurgeon is specialised in diagnosing surgically treatable diseases and injuries, and figuring out solutions for them.

The neurosurgeon expects patients who have been sent to a neuro-surgical examination by a doctor or who have gone through a diagnostic examination that suggests neurological impairment which needs neuro-surgical treatment or neurosurgeon's assessment. If necessary, the neurosurgeon can prescribe further examinations, and can also block nerves at our clinic. Unfortunately, because the spontaneous healing of certain impairments is unlikely, surgical intervention might be necessary. The price of the consultation is 150 euros.

My day-to-day work deals primarily with pain complaints of the back and legs, of which radiculitis is the most frequent.

Consultation for headaches

Headaches are common among adults, but nowadays even children have them. Many people suffer from headaches every day. Sometimes they are caused by other diseases. The most common headaches are stress headaches, cluster headaches and migraine headaches. Less common headaches are headaches from cold or flying, vertigo migraine and headaches arising from sexual activeness. Headaches caused by medicine are also on the rise.

Headaches are chronic if they occur more than on half of the days of the month. It is usually thought that it is impossible to get of rid of chronic headaches, but with the right identification, diagnose of the disease and with the right lifestyle and medication, it is possible to avoid it.

We recommend consulting Prof Toomas Toomsoo in case the headaches persist despite following the advice of the GP, since his speciality is discerning the types of headaches (differential diagnostics) and finding the best treatment plan and giving advice. The price of the consultation is 100 euros.

Consultation with the physiotherapist

To get help from a physiotherapist, you need to register for a first consultation where a comprehensive health assessment will be carried out, so the most effective and personalized treatment methods can be suggested based on your individual goals and needs. At the same time, physiotherapist and the patient will decide on the best treatment plan and the time schedule to carry it out.

The first consultation and therapy session is 45 euros and takes 50-60 minutes. Repeated session with a physiotherapist is 30 euros and lasts for 30 minutes.

When do we suggest a consultation with a physiotherapist?

You should also make an appointment with a physiotherapist if you have been referred to one by your family physician and the appointment fee is partially compensated by the family physician who provided the referral, through the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. You will then pay your share of cost-sharing. The extent of cost-sharing with a referral by a family physician is 35 euros and 25 euros for recurring therapy sessions.

  • Muscle strains and joint pains
  • Neck and shoulder problems
  • Headaches, lightheadedness, balance problems
  • Posture problems
  • Lower back pains
  • Radiating pain in arms and legs
  • To prevent and recover from sports traumas

Please fill in the questionnaire before the first consultation. It will give the physiotherapist a better idea of your health and help to understand and diagnose you more accurately. Please download the questionnaire, fill it in, and then send it to us, or alternatively, print it out, fill it in, and take it with you for the consultation.
