    12-Step Addiction Recovery Programme

The Minnesota Model or the 12-Step Programme is a widely used successful addiction recovery programme with a duration period of 12 months: 3 months of intensive basic programme and 9 months of follow-up programme.

The programme covers topics such as understanding the nature of addiction, creation of a personal recovery plan, assisted by individual and group therapy, educational lectures, physical trainings etc. This is supported by intensive cooperation with the counsellor, with the aim to prepare the person for an independent addiction-free life. After the intense programme period comes a follow-up period which involves more independence and reliance on the support group.

The objective of the recovery programme is to help the client understand the influence of the addiction on his/her whole life. The programme teaches practical ways to achieve and retain addiction-free lifestyle.

The counsellors working in the programme have a personal positive recovery experience, they understand in detail the different stages of the recovery process, the complicated emotions and crucial situations of the abstinence period, and they encourage the client to cope with all of this.

What does the programme involve and why to join it?

    • Understanding the problem and creating a recovery plan
In order to join the programme it is necessary to estimate the addiction disorder, evaluate the client’s health and create an individual recovery plan. The individual recovery plan is created by the psychiatrist and the addiction counsellor in cooperation and it consists of a weekly schedule for three months. Medication is used only in case of ultimate need. In order to succeed with the recovery the client needs to voluntarily decide to follow the recovery plan.
    • Individual support
Individual sessions with the addiction counsellor take place at least once a week at the beginning, later according to the need. The individual sessions follow a structured plan and cover specific topics. During the therapy sessions, the success of the recovery is evaluated, the counsellor and the client discuss how the schedule has been followed and set further objectives for the next week.
    • Group therapy
Sharing emotions with the addiction counsellor and other people with similar experience plays a significant role in the recovery process. The programme participant can benefit from the group therapy and lectures that serve to learn to open up emotionally, support the others and receive support.
    • Goal-oriented self-development
Individual work, reading and written exercises help to comprehend the 12-Step philosophy and work with the issues of everyday life.
    • Recovering the body and mind
The participants have an opportunity to take part in one training every week (Yoga, Pilates, Qi Gong, TRE-exercises). This enables to release the tensions of the body and mind. It is crucial to learn to spend free time with useful activities and develop healthy habits.
    • Preparation and support to join the support group
The counsellor helps to find an appropriate support group that enables to retain add iction-free lifestyle once the therapy programme is completed.
    • Development of the support network
Participation in the programme helps to find new friends and create a support network. This is important to avoid later relapse.
    • Supporting the family
The family members of an addicted person suffer from the situation likewise. In order to recover completely from addiction the whole family needs to be addressed, the communication and behaviour patterns within the family need to change. That is why the family members of the programme participants are also counselled since they usually have developed codependency. Codependency is also an addiction disorder that requires awareness and self-development in order to resolve. In codependency counselling the relationship healing programme is used. The programme involves the analysis of both childhood patterns and the influence of childhood on later relationships. Personal needs and healthy borders are taken under observation. First the relationship with oneself needs to be healed, then communication with the others. Clients can participate in group therapy in order to receive support from others with similar experience. The participants of the 12-Step Programme also receive an overview of codependency.
    • Retaining the lifestyle changes
It is very important to replace the current addictive lifestyle and friends with new activities and people who support addiction-free life. Unfortunately we are unable to transform into new people overnight. That is why it is necessary to retain the new lifestyle with the help of conscious and consistent activities. The programme gives the tools for this.
